……..”Imagine that the letter ‘G’ was used to symbolize a person” she said. “And she had lots of arrows of varying lengths pointing at her, symbolizing different people with different characters, the arrow that pierces through her, without killing her is her friend’. She is perfectly right. Believe it or not, that person that has a huge influence on you IS your friend.
A friend is someone that understands you completely. Someone that knows when you want to make a move, is making a move or has made a move. A friend is someone that you are not afraid to offend. Permit me to be a little crude- a friend is someone you can show your torn or ridiculous underwear (Yeah, the one with the spongebob picture on it) , ruined hairstyles and ugly pictures to. A friend is someone that sees beyond your make-up. A friend is someone that makes you laugh, cry, annoyed and happy ‘at the right time’.
Want more definitions? A friend is someone that knows the obvious and hidden things about you. Someone that laughs at your jokes even when they sound weird. Someone you can be awkward with and around. A friend is someone that doesn’t listen to gossip. A friend is someone that “beats you with one hand and draws you in for a hug with the other. A friend is one that can act as a parent or child depending on the situation. A friend sticks around when things get tough.
A friend is one that respects your beliefs and doesn’t “murder” you for ideals, he/she doesn’t believe in. Someone that grades you with your own yardstick. Someone that knows when to let you be or when “disturb” you. A friend is someone you are not ashamed to be found with and can easily tell your parents, lover or spouse about. A friend helps you achieve your goals and dreams. Someone that can stand FOR and BY you and never ON you. A friend is someone that never ever talks bad behind you and smiles at you afterwards. This is someone that never wants your hurt, fall or pain. This is someone that can’t be caught dead with your spouse or lover in a ‘compromising situation (if you know what I mean)……….
Quite a few definitions right, you can add yours depending on your personal experience
Someone has said, “A friend is a person who is willing to take me the way I am.” Accepting this as one definition of the word, may I quickly suggest that we are something less than a real friend if we leave a person the same way we find him. A friend is a possession we earn, not a gift. It was Emerson who said, “The only way to have a friend is to be one.” No one can be a friend until he is known. A friend is a person who will really take the time not only to know us, but to be with us.
Let us examine this quote by Aristotle –“What is a friend? A single soul in two bodies.” When you have a bond shared with someone other than that formed by the ‘lips’ that makes you unable to harm the person and to always feel his/her pain and joy, that person is your friend.
Another quote to be considered is one made by Oscar Wilde. He said “A true friend stabs you in the front.” He/she scolds you when you are wrong directly and doesn’t go about ‘reporting you to others. They don’t betray you or talk behind you. A friend shows you WHERE you’ve been wrong. A friend prefers to “kill you in front of you” than make fun of you from the background. This doesn’t mean we can go around stabbing our friends with hurtful words. Rather, it means being up front with friends about important issues, raising gentle questions with tact and love, never gossiping or putting them down to others behind their backs.
Jim Morrison said “A true friend is someone who lets you have total freedom to be yourself — and especially to feel. Or, not feel. Whatever you happen to be feeling at the moment is fine with them. That’s what real love amounts to — letting a person be what he really is”. You should be free around a person called your friend.
Hope you are not getting bored by these quotes. They are there to help you differentiate between friends and loose-ends. Oprah Winfrey said “Everyone wants to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.” Your friend will be eager to share the good times with you as well as the bad.
Other quotes are : “People will walk in and walk out of your life, but the one whose footstep made a long lasting impression is the one you should never allow to walk out.” Michael Bassey Johnson
“When it hurts to look back, and you’re afraid to look ahead, you can look beside you and your best friend will be there.” (Unknown)
“It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.” Friedrich Nietzsche.
Quite a lot of definitions to read and it may be burdensome to do so. But before you close that browser or switch to the next tab, ensure to read a few and compare them to your present friends. If they measure up, beautiful! and if they don’t, well……
The succeeding series will explain the types of friends available, how to relate with them and other intriguing sub-ideas. Until then, relax and feel good!…………
